A0: Lesson 11 - Negation and Sentence Structure

Learn to form negative sentences in Dutch!

Learn Negation with "Niet"

Ik ben niet moe. - I am not tired.

Jij hebt niet gelijk. - You are not right.

Hij gaat niet naar school. - He is not going to school.

Ik eet niet. - I am not eating.

Learn Sentence Structure Tips

Subject + Verb + Niet + Rest - The word "niet" usually follows the verb in a sentence.

Ik drink water niet. - I do not drink water. (Less common, but possible for emphasis)

Practice

Translate to Dutch: "I am not tired."

Cultural Note

Did you know? Dutch people often use negation politely, like saying "Ik heb het niet" (I don’t have it) when declining. This can soften a refusal in conversations!
